EVENTS: ECOBREEDS promotes animal welfare and ethical research in North Macedonia
On 22 June 2026, the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine at the University “St. Kliment Ohridski” – Bitola, in cooperation with the Faculty of Biotechnical Sciences, organised a lecture entitled Ethics in Scientific Research: European Standards and the Use of Animals for Scientific Purposes. The event brought together researchers, academic staff, students and professionals working in animal welfare and livestock production.
As part of the programme, the ECOBREEDS project was presented with a particular focus on its pilot activities related to sheep welfare assessment under different production and management systems. The project team introduced the methodologies applied during the implementation of the pilot activities and discussed the use of internationally recognised animal welfare assessment protocols.
The event concluded with an expert discussion on welfare assessment methodologies, ethical standards and the practical implementation of European legislation related to animal welfare. The exchange of knowledge and recommendations contributed to strengthening cooperation between academia and stakeholders while supporting the implementation of sustainable livestock farming practices and the objectives of the ECOBREEDS project.
